How Modern Sonar Revealed a Piece of Maritime History

In the latest article, Teledyne Marine explores our hydrographers’ work. Professional competence, combined with quality equipment and being in the right place at the right time – may lead to occasional historic discoveries!

“What looks like murky, shifting water… can sometimes hide a story waiting to resurface.

During a routine hydrographic survey on Latvia’s Daugava River, the team at LVR Flote noticed something unusual. Not the typical debris they’re used to mapping – but a perfectly defined shape, standing out clearly from the riverbed.

A four-metre-long anchor. Undisturbed for decades.

With data from the SeaBat T51-R sonar from Teledyne Marine, the team could already tell this wasn’t an ordinary find. When divers recovered it, the mystery only deepened: wrapped around the anchor was a fragment of net from a Riga factory that closed in the 1940s.

So how did it get there?

No one knows, yet…

But this is exactly what makes hydrography so fascinating. It’s not just about safe navigation or data accuracy. It’s about revealing what others can’t see; and sometimes, uncovering pieces of history long thought lost.

What started as a routine survey became something much more: a reminder that every riverbed has a story.”
